Cutting a watermelon can get messy and confusing. Should you cube it? Wedge it? What about the juice everywhere?

Don’t worry — this easy, no-fuss method will show you how to cut a watermelon cleanly, quickly, and safely in under 5 minutes!

🍉 What You’ll Need:

  • 1 ripe watermelon
  • Large sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Clean plate or container for storing pieces

Step 1: Cut Off Both Ends

Place the watermelon on a cutting board. Use a large knife to slice off both ends (about 1 inch).
This gives a stable base so the melon doesn’t roll.

🧠 Pro Tip: Use a serrated knife for better grip on the thick rind.

Step 2: Stand the Watermelon Up

With the ends cut flat, stand the watermelon upright on one end.
This makes the next steps super easy and safe.

Step 3: Slice Down the Middle

Cut the watermelon straight down the center to split it into two halves.

Step 4: Cut Halves into Quarters

Lay each half flat-side down and cut them in half again — now you have 4 quarters.

Step 5: Slice Down Vertically

Take one quarter and make vertical cuts about 1 inch apart (don’t cut through the rind yet).

Step 6: Cut Across Horizontally

Now turn the quarter and make horizontal cuts across to form a grid. You’ll get cubes!

Step 7: Scoop or Flip

You can either:

  • Scoop out the cubes with a spoon or knife, OR
  • Flip the rind inside-out — the cubes will pop up for easy grabbing!

After step 4, cut lengthwise into thick sticks — great for mess-free snacking!

Clean-Up Tip:

Keep a large bowl nearby to collect all your cubes and store them in the fridge for up to 3–4 days.

Final Thoughts

Cutting a watermelon doesn’t have to be messy or hard.
With this simple method, you’ll enjoy fresh, juicy cubes or sticks in no time — perfect for summer snacks, smoothies, or parties!
